How to: Make an iOS device “read” web page content

Last evening, their was a school bus crash down the street from me.  Being a news hound (and a son of a fire fighter), I wanted to see if their was anyone hurt.  My iPhone notified me that their was an update to the crash on a local newspaper site so I went there.  The article was long and I didn’t have time to read all of it.

By accident, I found a nice feature that allows the iOS device to read a web page with (what sounds like) Siri‘s voice.  Here’s how to activate it:

1.  Go to a web page that you wish the device to read.
2.  Hold your finger on the screen until you see a light blue block around the article.
3.  A pop-up window will come up with two options: COPY and SPEAK.
4.  Using the dots, move the blue square around the paragraphs that you wish to read.
5.  Tap SPEAK.
6.  The device will begin reading the selected text.

Is the device speaking to fast or slow?  Here’s how to control that:

1.  Go into SETTINGS > GENERAL > ACCESSIBILITY.
2.  Select the “SPEAK SELECTION” option.
3.  Find the “SPEAK RATE” option.  Turtle icon = slower, rabbit icon = faster.

Thats it.

Rumor: New version of iOS for iOS Devices ready for release

Along with the news about today’s event, it seems that Apple is also getting ready to release another update for its iOS devices as well.

Sources have told us that the company has been doing a lot of internal testing (Quality Assurance) making sure that the latest update(s) is/are ready for “prime time.”  These sources have also told us that the update may contain some “hidden features” that are not yet available but will be announced soon.

Fake iPad 3 images hitting the web

Hours before the official announcement, it seems that some Apple news web sites are falling victim to getting (and sometimes publishing) fake iPad 3 images that they have been receiving.

We have been the party of some of these as well, but choose not to publish such information for fear of being ‘scammed’ like everyone else.

We will publish any official images of the products once they have been announced.

It’s better to have no news, then to be wrong (and red faced) about it.

Apple to unveil new Apple TVs along with the iPad 3 next week

We’re getting word that Apple is also planning on introducing new Apple TVs along with new iPads at next week’s media event.  However, our source also says that the company may pull the new Apple TV presentation at the last minute to focus on the iPad 3.

But if the company does, the new Apple TV will be unveiled shortly thereafter either on the main Apple.com web site, or by sending a media release.

As for specs, our source did not have them at the time of this notification, but will report back if/when they find out.

Apple disabling unauthorized Siri access

Reports are coming in that Apple has added a new barrier to the software that tries to run Siri on devices other then the iPhone 4S.  The move shows that Apple can, indeed, tell what device its Siri is running on.

Some users with jailbroken iPhone 4 (and some Jailbroken iPads) have been reporting that they have been having problems using the feature since early Monday morning.
